Willow Smith Reveals She Self-harmed During Early Career Success
Jada Pinkett Smith has come a long way from her humble beginnings in Baltimore.
Willow Smith made a shocking revelation to mom Jada Pinkett Smith, admitting that she self-harmed early in her career.
Smith, 17, opened up about “cutting” herself to her mother and
grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, on Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch
talk show, Red Table Talk in an episode that streamed on Monday.
“I feel like I lost my sanity at one point,” Smith says of the time surrounding her 2010 single, Whip My Hair.
Smith continues: “I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was
kind of just in this gray area of ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is
there anything I can do besides this?’ ”
“After the tour and the promotion and all that, they wanted me to
finish my album,” she says. “I was just like, no, I’m not going to do
that. After all of that settled down and it was a kind of lull, I was
just listening to a lot of dark music and it was so crazy and I was just
plunged into this black hole and I was like cutting myself.”
A visibly emotional Pinkett Smith says she “had no idea” her daughter
was self-harming, and Banfield-Jones says she “never saw any signs of
that.”
“When were you cutting yourself? I didn’t see that part,” a stunned Pinkett Smith says. “Cutting yourself where?”
“On my wrist,” Smith says. “You can’t really see it, but there’s still a little something there.”
“I honestly felt like I was experiencing so much emotional pain but
my physical circumstances weren’t reflecting that,” Smith says.
Smith revealed that it has been five years since she stopped
self-harming. “I never talk about it because it was such a short, weird
point in my life,” she says. “But you have to pull yourself out of it.”
