Young African American poet and activist, Amanda Gorman Wears Kente-inspired Gown Designed By Virgil Abloh For Vogue Cover

Young African American poet and activist, Amanda Gorman came into prominence in January this year when she became the youngest presidential inaugural poet in the history of the United States of America.

She was the young black lady in the yellow coat who delivered a moving poem during the swearing-in of President Joe Biden and the history-making Vice President Kamala Harris.

Since then, Amanda has been on a whirlwind media ride that has taken her to a sit down with Oprah Winfrey and now to the cover of the leading fashion magazine, Vogue.

As the cover girl of Vogue’s May issue, Amanda became the only poet to ever land on the cover of Vogue.

Ahead of the publication of the May issue, Vogue has released two cover photos of Amanda as their cover girl.

In one of the photos, Amanda was wearing a Louis Vuitton gown that is inspired by the Kente cloth.

The blanket was designed by Louis Vuitton to celebrate its men’s artistic director Virgil Abloh’s personal Ghanaian heritage.

Amanda reflected on the importance of wearing the Louis Vuitton gown in tweet after the covers were released.

“Honored to be the first poet EVER on the cover of Vogue and what a joy to do so while wearing a Black designer, Virgil Abloh,” she tweeted.

“This is called the Rise of Amanda Gorman, but it’s truly for all of you, both named & unseen, who lift me up,” she added.

This again indicates how African culture continuous to provide new dimensions to statement making established western fashion.
