Diego Maradona body arrives in coffin at Argentinian president’s mansion

Diego Maradona’s body has arrived at the presidential palace in Argentina, as the country prepares to pay its last respects to the football legend.

The 60-year-old and greatest footballer of his generation suffered a cardiac arrest at a home in Tigre, Argentina, which led to his death on the 25th of November 2020.

Maradona had been recuperating from the removal of a blood clot on the brain.

Speaking on 2 November, Maradona’s doctor, Leopoldo Luque, told reporters the procedure was a ‘routine surgery’.

He added: “We are going to operate today. He is lucid, he understands, he agrees with the intervention.”

Since news of his passing was reported, there has been an outpouring of emotion, with people sending their condolences to his family and sharing their memories of watching him play.

As a crowd of weeping fans gathered outside the presidential palace on Thursday morning, Maradona’s coffin was lifted out of an ambulance and brought into the palace where it will lie in state for three-day national mourning declared by the Argentinian president Alberto Fernandez.

Some fans were also pictured outside the Buenos Aires stadium where Maradona began his career setting up a makeshift shrine to celebrate Argentina’s legendary number 10.

Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, was the inspiration for Argentina’s World Cup success in Mexico in 1986, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
