Oscars director Glenn Weiss proposes to girlfriend during Emmys acceptance speech

His Emmy award wasn’t the only hardware Glenn Weiss had in hand Monday night.

Weiss, the director of the Oscars, snagged a trophy at the 70th Emmy Awards for best director of a variety special – and used the special moment to propose to his girlfriend.

The director’s acceptance speech started with a shout-out to his mother, who died two weeks ago.

“Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan (Svendsen),” he said. “Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

Svendsen was in the audience, and appeared shocked by Weiss’s proposal – but quickly mouthed the words yes before heading up on stage.

“I didn’t ask yet!” Weiss joked as she accepted. “This is the ring that my dad put on my mom’s finger 67 years ago… Jan, I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?”

Weiss then got down on one knee, slipped the ring on his bride-to-be’s finger, and the two shared a kiss.

This was Weiss’s 14th Emmy win.
