Truck runs into presidential convoy; damages Dep Chief of Staff vehicle

The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin has explained that an articulated truck run into the presidential convoy at Konongo in the Ashanti region on Friday dawn.

The truck driver reportedly ignored signals from the dispatch riders, veered unto the road and rammed into the side of the vehicle of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Francis Asenso Boakye.

Mr Asenso Boakye has since been examined by doctors and he is doing well.

The accident happened after President Akufo-Addo's vehicle passed and was ahead.

The president was on his way to the Brong Ahafo region via Kumasi for a three-day visit.

The accident happened around 1am and according to Mr Eugene Arhin, the Presidential convoy left Accra around 11:30 pm Thursday after a cabinet meeting.

According to him, "this was after the president’s vehicle had moved out of sight, this articulated truck, I don't know what happened, all of a sudden just veered back onto the road and unfortunately at that time it was the Deputy Chief of Staff that was in the way and it completely ripped off the side of the vehicle, burst almost all the tyres."

The vehicle was mangled after the crash.

The truck driver after the accident drove off without stopping.

Mr Eugene Arhin in a radio interview with Accra based Joy FM explained the accident has since been reported and the police are looking for the hit-and-run truck driver.

"As it happened all the attention was on the Deputy Chief of Staff, the number plate of the articulated truck has been picked and given to the police so we expect, as I speak with you, we wouldn't have an update whether he has been picked or not but before close of day we should have an arrest."

Mr Arhin said "he [Asenso Boakye] has been taken to hospital to make sure he is fine and as I speak to you he is currently with us as we are touring the Brong Ahafo region... luckily he escaped unscathed but as I said whatever be the case he had to undergo medical check-up to make sure he was completely ok."

"Himself, the policeman with him, none of them was injured, they are all very fine," Mr Arhin added.
