National Sports Festival returns after 6 years

After six years of hibernation, the National Sports Festival has been revived. A great platform for young athethes to show their mettle, the competition is credited for highlighting the brightest young sportsmen and women from the 10 regions in Ghana.

In his speech at the opening ceremony held on September 2 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Vice President H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia expressed his elation at the return of the festival. He also reiterated the core purpose of the meeting as one for unity and the development of outstanding local talent:

“The benefit of bringing the youth of the country together is that the athletes and officials have the opportunity to develop friendship on the playing fields, off the fields and in the Games Village which many a time become lifelong relationships.

“The exposure to other perspectives gained during socialisation at such festivals or during tournaments make the participants more understanding, empathetic and tolerant of other peoples’ views and interests. The eventual impact on society is, people learn to peacefully co-exist and resolve their differences more amicably rather than through violent means”, he said.

He also pointed out that the competition ultimately inures to the strengthening of our social fabric as a nation.

“This sports festival should build bridges to bring people together for development and it is not for erecting walls to keep them apart”, he also stressed.
