11th Anniversary Of National Spelling Bee Launched
Mrs. Samira Bawumia, wife of the Vice President of Ghana has declared the eleventh edition of the The Spelling Bee Ghana officially launched at a ceremony in Accra. The launch, which took place at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall on Tuesday begun the process for the 11th edition of the National Final of The Spelling Bee to take place in February 2018.
The ceremony drew an array of formidable speakers including Dr. Jim Dobson of the USAID, Dr. Charles Owu-Ewie, Dean at University of Education Winneba, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Klottey Korley and Ms Abla Dzifa Gomashie, former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. The chosen theme for the 11th edition of The Spelling Bee is “The Relevance of the Mother Tongue in Literacy.”
Besides commending the organisers, Young Educators Foundation, for ensuring that many young Ghanaian school children would be trained to not only read and spell correctly, but also obtain confidence in the process, most speakers at the event encouraged the use of the mother tongue in teaching young people.
Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director of Young Educators Foundation, organisers of The Spelling Bee, who also spoke at the ceremony, underscored the importance of the programme in the lives of many young Ghanaians over the last 10 years and called on corporate Ghana to support such schemes to ensure they would be sustained.
“Over the last decade we have devoted our time and effort to building a platform that would encourage young people to read and we can say for a fact that we have managed to attain this objective over the 10 years that The Spelling Bee has been here,” she said.
She paid special tribute to the sponsors who had stayed faithful her company organization and their dream of making child literacy a priority. Her commendation also went to the individuals and organizations that showed support by donating to The Spelling Bee this year.
She noted that some companies such as DStv, Rufus Green Parks, Us Embassy, Voltic/Muscatella, South African Airways and Blue Knights Bookshop have by their unwavering support to The Spelling Bee kept it going and thus was very thankful to them. She expressed the greatest appreciation to the lead sponsor for many years, Indomie for their immense support to the Bee.
Mrs. Tachie-Menson commended all the schools which have participated in The Spelling Bee since its inception, the teachers who prepare the students as well as the students who spend their time learning hard to take part in The Spelling Bee.
Lily Tugbah of Solidarity International School, Ashiaman & The Spelling Bee 2017 winner spoke about her journey and the experiences that came her way, including taking part in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA.
There will be the regional competitions between the months of October and November 2016. The finals of the eleventh anniversary edition of The Spelling Bee will take place in February 2018 with the winner getting an all expenses paid trip to represent Ghana at The Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA in May of 2018.
