Sudan's Fifa ban disrupts African Champions League

Football's world governing body Fifa has banned Sudan because of government interference in the sport.

A warning was issued last month after the government installed a new FA president.

The suspension means that Friday's two African champions league matches, both featuring Sudanese clubs, will not now go ahead.

That is because the ban prevents any Sudanese team from taking part in international competition.

Al Merreikh had been due to face Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia this evening, with a chance of making it to the knock out stages.

Al Hilal were supposed to be hosting Ferroviario Beira of Mozambique. Both sides are in the same Champions League group.

Unless the ban is lifted quickly, it will also have an effect on the Confederation Cup, because Sudan's Al Hilal Obeid are due to play Zambia's Zesco United on Sunday.

Obeid have already qualified from the group but their long term future in the competition is very much in doubt.
