UCC suspend 22 students over ATL, Oguaa hall clashes
Twenty two students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), have
been suspended following the recent skirmishes in the university. The 22, mostly executives of the Atlantic Hall were punished for
their inability to ensure a peaceful hall week celebration that resulted
in the skirmishes. The suspension ranges from two to four semesters.
Last March, visiting students from the University of Ghana and the
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology participating in a
week long celebration of the Atlantic Hall attacked students of the
Oguaa Hall.
The ensuing chaos between the students and the Oguaa Hall students
resulted in injuries to 10 students and destruction of property running
into thousands of Ghana cedis.
A doctor at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Dr David Walawah said one of the students may never be able to walk again.
The 22 students were later invited by the police for questioning and granted bail.
According to the Public Relations Director of the university, Major
(rtd) Baah Bentum, they were suspended because they had pledged in a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure that the hall week
celebration was incident free.
"The punishment was not because they were involved in the violence that occurred,” he said.
Rather, he said the punishment was for their failure to ensure that
the celebrations were peaceful and their inability to identify the
perpetrators after signing the MOU to ensure that the celebrations were
peaceful.
Major Bentum said they are therefore taking responsibility for the
violence that occurred and that the university would not condone
violence among students but ensure that students were held responsible
for their actions.
