Donald Trump Supporters Call for ‘Hamilton’ Boycott in Defense of Mike Pence

Supporters of Donald Trump and Mike Pence started the hashtag #BoycottHamilton to defend the vice president-elect who was booed while attending the Broadway show “Hamilton” Friday night, and addressed directly by the cast after the show.

“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” said current cast-member Brandon Victor Dixon Friday night as the rest of the cast stood behind him. “But we hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us.”

Trump demanded that the cast apologize in two tweets sent out Saturday morning: “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!,” Trump wrote. “The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”

Dixon replied, “Conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen.”

An account with the handle @TheGOPReport wrote, “Completely inappropriate for the cast of #Hamilton to address Mike Pence like this. Not the time or the place. Time to #BoycottHamilton.”

“Dear Mr. Pence. Thank you [for] visiting. Please sit there so we can lecture you. We won’t give you [a] chance to respond. Unfair. #boycotthamilton” Twitter user @mrmcoupe1 wrote, summarizing the sentiments of the hashtag

@Buppy9999 wrote, “Jeez, now we can’t even go watch a lame Broadway play without being lectured?? I guess it’s time to #BoycottHamilton BTW Pence WON #Hamilton.”

Several members of Hollywood also chimed in, mostly poking holes in the protest by pointing out or joking about the scarcity of tickets.

“Westworld” actor Jeffrey Wright tweeted, “#BoycottHamilton? Good luck with that. Tickets are already sold-out past President-elect Troll’s impeachment.”

Jillian Michaels joked, “For everyone who is going to #BoycottHamilton my family, friends, & I will fall on the sword & take your tickets. #wegotyou”

John Legend wrote, “If #boycotthamilton goes like #boycottbeyonce I’m gonna start #boycottjohnlegend. S— seems lucrative.”
